I can't get it to play. I'm feeling very technically challenged lately.
I just discovered your podcast (heard about it on just about every other podcast I listen to), and have now heard every episode. Keep up the good work! As for art vs. craft: I think that if you are just following directions, it is a craft, but if you are doing something creative with it, then knitting can be an art. Not quite a hard and fast distinction, but it is a difficult question!
Good show ladies- I tend to agree with Stephanie's view of craft meaning CRAp. I hate referring to my knitting as a craft but feel elitist calling it an art...though I do. I call the bags I make "hand knit art that happens to function" because a customer who is an artist herself. said something really really nice to me like, "you paint with your yarns the way I paint with my paints" Maybe she was giving me too much credit, but it did make me feel better about calling it an art. I am creating he patterns and choosing wear to put what color. Craft sounds like popsicle stick gluing, though I have to say I once saw a kick-a** purse for sale on Etsy made of popsicle sticks. So for me, when I am doing original designs, it is an art. Of course no matter what its called in the end it's knitting and it's ALL GOOD.

I'm loving your podcast, even if it needs a little more knitting content (in my opinion). but you ladies are crazy and fun and I like that!
Care for another opinion on the craft v art question?
I think it has to do entirely with the process of creation. Is the knitter, or crocheter, etc. simply following the pattern exactly as laid out by the designer, or are they applying design theory to create the best article possible?
While I completely agree with you about popsicle stick crafts, I know that in a true artist's hands they could turn popsicle sticks and glue-on eyes into a piece of social commentary worthy of a gallery show.
....and of course, I got the creeps because of the EVP! (Shannon, you know what I'm talking about!)
I don't know what you guys did, but whatever changes you made has made it so I continue to have issues downloading your podcast. I have not been able to download at all. I love your podcast. Now I can't listen to you any longer.
I'm with you too Stephanie about the CRAPht's and I hate nicknacks too. Loved the creepy guy laughing in the background.
Was it one of you who made some comment about sock yarn stash that went something like, "I'm not as bad as Miss Lime--she has something like 80 skeins!" I ask because I just counted the skeins that are upstairs in my computer room closet, and there are 115. Of course there are more downstairs; you know, the Regia, Opal, Trekking, solid colors--the workhorse yarns. I just keep the eye candy hand-dyed ones up here. So I am just wondering, how bad is that? Should I worry? Should I repent? Should I jump in front of a moving car or impale myself my one set of straight needles? Or did you mean bad as in good, where "She's baaaaad" is a compliment? Just checking.
Is it art of craft?
Here's my take on it.
First, has it been done to death? Do we really need another painting of a deer in the forest?
Well, this is definitely craft at its lowest level. Now say we take that deer in the forest and put PJs on him. I haven't seen that before and I would certainly do a double-take. Well, that's fine art.
Fine art can be functional or not. However, it must get a reaction out of you and it doesn't have to be a positive reaction. It's more like "I made you look!" as to " not another red bird in a tree." No matter how well that red bird is rendered, it's not fine art.
Now commercial art is a matter of borrowing and stealing to get your attention. It can be trite or clever. It can be rude and offensive but it must get your attention.
So where does that leave my knitting? I was an art major (painting to be exact) in college. I would not consider the knitting I'm doing now art. It is a craft but not a "trashy" craft. It's just a craft that has been around a long, long time. I'd like to be called a craftsman. Doesn't that sound professional.? Also, I'd like to continue to keep the "old" crafts (knitting, spinning, weaving, etc.) going. When knitting was invented, it was out of necessity. It may have been enjoyable, but people knitted because they needed warm clothes.
Now take a look at this lady's website. The things she does with yarn is definitely "art."

Some day I would like to take my fiber arts to that level. Right now I'm just playing, practicing and having a good time.
As to be lumped in with the "dumb looking dolls standing in the corner with their heads covered", we can always say we are doing "traditional crafts" — not "trendy crafts."
So call me a "traditional craftsman" until I reach that fine art level.

How about a conversion to MP3 format for the rest of us?
SP11 signups are up, and you should totally join! (I'm a hostess.)
P.S. I love your podcast. :)
Thanks so much for the heads up on getting ready for Ravelry. I spent much of one day photographing my stash and projects and uploading to Flickr. Got my invitation the next day! Had a blast setting up! Thanks!
